Underneath the argument
Skid has not set out to become cruel. In his own mind, he has become clearer, braver and better informed. He speaks with the moral confidence of someone who believes every important question has already been settled.
But when certainty becomes identity, disagreement starts to feel like betrayal. Every conversation becomes a test. Every old memory has to pass through a new set of rules.
Skid Doufas
Self-assured, confident and basking in his own righteousness, Skid believes without irony that he has found the correct way to think. He does not see himself as intolerant. He sees himself as one of the few people brave enough to care.
Stan
Stan has loved Skid like a brother for most of their adult lives. He is not trying to defeat an ideology or score a point. He is trying to understand what happened to his mate, and how long a friendship can survive when every question is treated as a moral failure.

Why it feels familiar
Across pubs, kitchens and group chats, people are watching old friends become consumed by a worldview that leaves less and less room for friendship. Skid and Stan give that experience somewhere to be funny, uncomfortable and recognisable, without pretending either man is disposable.
